TU Offers New Degree Program

Thomas University launched a new business degree program that will give students more career opportunities in the fast-growing financial world.

TU students can now earn a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree by conveniently taking flexible online courses.

“Accounting is one of the basic building blocks of business programs,” Dr. Pauline Ray, Division Chair of Business at Thomas University, said. “We had a Business Administration major with a concentration in Accounting in the past, but we are now offering a BS in Accounting in an online program accessible to students who work and have busy family lives.”

Students can specialize in Public Accounting or Managerial Accounting. The new program is also designed to allow students majoring in Business Management or Marketing to have the unique opportunity to minor in accounting.

Tom Harrison, partner of Thomasville-based Lanigan & Associates PC and past chairman of the Georgia Society of CPAs, said there is a tremendous need for accountants in southwest Georgia.

“This program will provide much needed supply of educated accountants to our local markets,” he said. “We applaud Thomas University for their commitment to the business community and the success of their student body by providing this needed course of study.  Accounting majors can go right into to workforce with their bachelor degree or they can continue into a fifth year and become Certified public accountants.  Either option is a smart decision for students that want to learn accounting the “language of business.””

The 120-credit degree program will equip students with the knowledge and skills required to successfully compete in the workforce.

Students will be able to apply critical and analytical decision-making skills to accounting issues, read and analyze financial statements, and recognize ethical and legal issues facing financial professionals.

They will also know how to prepare income tax schedules and returns, demonstrate an understanding of cost determination and allocation, and apply knowledge of business concepts and functions in an integrated manner.

After the program’s completion, graduates will be qualified to become financial advisors, auditors, sales managers, accountants, and budget analysts, among other professions.
