Learning Support at Thomas University

Part-Time (Approximately 10 hours per week)

Position Description

Peer Tutors work one-on-one and in group settings with students to help them develop subject area knowledge. Additionally, Peer Tutors support students’ academic achievement by reviewing and clarifying classroom instruction, assisting with the development of study skills, time management, and basic organization, which help students acquire new knowledge, apply previously learned information to new settings, and develop problem-solving skills.  They also serve as role models demonstrating strategies, attitudes, and behaviors of successful learnings.

Federal or VA Work-Study eligible students preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Attend all meetings and training sessions as scheduled and arrive promptly for all tutoring sessions and study group sessions.
  2. Adhere to all tutoring guidelines and best practices for ethical tutoring and academic integrity.
  3. Maintain clear records of each session using LibCal and LibRerference, including but not limited to weekly schedule, documenting each tutoring session, and providing follow-up information to the Director of Learning Support.
  4. Monitor SpringShare Chat during shifts.
  5. Assist students as they develop study skills, problem-solving skills, and self-editing skills.
  6. Preparing for tutoring sessions by reviewing course related information.
  7. Consult with a tutee’s instructors and/or advisor for advice, guidance, and direction in Peer Tutoring support for students.
  8. Conduct in-person or online tutoring sessions as scheduled.
  9. Conduct at least one in-person study group lasting one hour each week to be scheduled during the time the Learning Commons is open.
  10.  Inform and/or consult with the Director of Learning Support if problems are encountered, or the need arises for assistance relating to a specific tutoring situation.
  11. Work cooperatively with Learning Support Peer Tutor staff to deliver a cohesive tutoring program and to respond in a professional manner to diverse student needs.
  12. Submit unofficial transcripts and self-evaluation to the Director of Learning Support at the end of each semester as part of your semester evaluation.
  13. Complete Self-evaluation with the Director of Learning Support at the end of each year or during your last semester with Learning Support.

Evaluation Expectations

Each Peer Tutor will complete the following evaluation process at the end of each semester:

  1. Submit unofficial transcriptions to the Director of Learning Support to ensure that the minimum GPA is maintained.
  2. Submission of Self-Evaluation form
  3. Meet with Director of Learning Support to establish goals for following semester.
