Thomas University to highlight National Disability Awareness & Advocacy Month

Post Published On:

October marks National Disability Awareness & Advocacy Month, and Thomas University will be spreading awareness through a series of events on campus.

There will be a presentation, games, and food throughout the month as students, faculty, and staff learn more about the issues surrounding disability and how they can help.

Ben Huntzinger, the founder of Spartan Wheel Chariots and an alumnus of Thomas University, will be speaking to TU’s Military Transition Football team.

Huntzinger suffered a spinal cord injury that has left him paralyzed from the chest down, but he is not letting his injury define him. Huntzinger is using his company to create rugged all-terrain wheelchairs that can go anywhere.

In addition to Huntzinger’s presentation, there will be gifts, food, a wheelchair basketball game, and gifts such as calm strips, sign language pencils, sign language stickers, and a diverse bunch of stress balls.

The month’s events:

Each week, except during fall break, students can stop by the Smith-Bonvillian and get free disability awareness gifts to display to show their support for people with disabilities.

Wednesday, October 4 – Donuts and Doggies during Midterms in the Learning Commons. There will be Red Hills’ Therapy Dogs from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Students can pet the dogs and eat donuts.

Monday, October 16 – Presentation by Disability Awareness and Advocacy guest speaker Ben Huntzinger for the 7:30 p.m. at the Magnolia Campus

Wednesday, October 18 – Students can make name place cards in Braille at the Learning Commons between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
