Philanthropy event boosts student scholarships

Thomas University is furthering its investment in the success of students, courtesy of the philanthropic gifts from sponsors of the ‘Dining for Education’ “A Cajun Occasion” drive-thru dinner in March.
The Cajun themed event, which was held at Sweet and Savory Sisters restaurant, otherwise known as SASS, in Thomasville, raised over $51,000 after expenses from the donations of 48 sponsors, including community businesses, corporations and individuals.
Carla Turner, director of development for Thomas University, said the funds will be used for student scholarships to help create life-changing experiences for students that will enhance their futures and successes in life.
“Our goal is that not only will it benefit the student, but their families, the next generation, our community and our region,” she said.
Dr. Andy Sheppard, president of Thomas University, said educating students is our mission, and that means that students need access to college, so they need the financial help.
Mckenna Swartzman, an elementary education major, who has been a direct benefactor from scholarships that derived from any and all donations that were collected this year, said scholarships have provided an excellent opportunity for students.
“Scholarships provide a valuable education for all of us to be successful in the future,” she said.
In addition to supporting the success of students with scholarships, the event also allows Thomas University to foster long-term relationships with local businesses, organizations, companies and individuals.
The philanthropic event has been organized by the ‘Dining for Education’ planning committee for numerous years.
“The success of the event wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous support from the community,” Turner said. “In 2020, with the threat of Covid-19, we decided that the former sit-down event would proceed with a drive-through format, allowing sponsors to celebrate our students, while being safe.”
Members of the planning committee, include Rachel Arnold, chair; Christa Carter, Janna Crane, Raquel England, Brandy Kirkham, Whitney Marshall, Leah Merschman, Eve Rumble, and Marcy Sizemore.
“The scholarship funds will help prepare students for a bright future in whatever career path they choose,” Turner said. “Again, we are very thankful for the support that the community of Thomasville provides for helping with that mission.”
