Hurricanes Swirl Past Night Hawks
April 22, 2008
NCAA DII Georgia Southwestern University Hurricanes (16-32) swirled past the host Thomas University Night Hawks, 15-6, in the final regular season game for TU at Varnedoe Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Six runs in the GSW half of the second opened up the scoring and the Hurricanes cruised to victory. GSW extended their lead to 13-1 until the sixth inning when TU scored three. Junior pinch hitter Mike Edwards (1-1, R) led off the inning with a base hit, sophomore center fielded Brett Huett (1-5, R) then doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Both runners would score on double by junior second baseman Mike Vitello (1-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B). Sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (1-4, RBI) would follow with another hit to score Vitello from second. Rodriguez with advance to third on a two out base hit but would be left stranded as GSW would escape any further damage. The Night Hawks had two solo home runs on the day from senior catcher Brett Palmer (1-2, R, RBI, HR) and junior right fielder Randy Adams (2-4, R, RBI, 2B, SB). Junior starting pitcher Scott Mancauskas (2-3) would take loss lasting only 1 2/3 innings and allowing six earned runs on four hits.
TU will wrap up their regular season with a road trip to Daytona Beach, FL on Saturday April 26 for a double header against Region XIV foe Embry Riddle University beginning at 3PM.
Night hawks Split With Florida College

The Thomas University Night hawks (24-20) split a Saturday afternoon double header, 11-1 & 2-10, against Florida College (14-24) at Varnedoe Stadium.
Senior pitcher Kyle Palmer (3-4) took the mound for the last time at Varnedoe Stadium in game one and made his performance a memorable one allowing one earned run over five 2/3 innings in the victory. Sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (2-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR) continued his swinging a hot bat driving in three runs and hitting a home run. TU won the game in the bottom of the sixth by the "Run Rule".
Head coach Mike Lee honored his six seniors in between games and recognized each for their achievements as Night Hawks. The seniors are: third baseman / catcher Stephen Cheney (Thomasville, GA), catcher Mike Griffin (Ocala, FL), catcher Brett Palmer (Thomasville, GA), pitcher Kyle Palmer (Thomasville, GA), pitcher Cody Whitlock (Webster, FL) and shortstop Ken Zarrillo (Spring Hill, FL). Although TU plays one more game at home, the day marked their last Saturday afternoon game at Varnedoe. "We will miss them all", said Lee. "They all have been through a lot here at TU and have done many good things on and off the field for our program. We wish them all the luck in the world for their future".
In game two, TU took the early 1-0 lead when sophomore center fielder Brett Huett (4-4, R, RBI, 2 2B, SB) hit a lead off double then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Cheney (0-2, RBI) after stealing third. FC took over from their scoring ten unanswered runs over the next five innings and taking advantage of four TU errors. The Night Hawks would get one back late but it would be far from enough. Junior Pitcher Chris Poulos (5-3) took the loss, lasting only two innings and allowing six earned runs. Rodriguez (2-2, 2 BB, SB) would get another two hits to finish the day with four hits in six at bats and raise his season batting average above .300.
TU wraps up their home schedule this coming Tuesday April 22 with a single game against the visiting NCAA DII Georgia Southwestern University Hurricanes. First pitch is set for 4PM.
BPC Walks Off To Edge TU

Brewton Parker College (20-26) used three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a come from behind 9-8 walk off win against the visiting Thomas University Night Hawks (23-19) on Tuesday afternoon in Mt. Vernon, GA.
TU took a 4-2 advantage into the seventh but BPC got one run to cut the deficit in half then scored three more runs in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead into the ninth. Junior second baseman Mike Vitello (2 R, BB, SB) led of the ninth with a walk and would come around to score on a one out double by senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (2-5, R, RBI, 2B). Sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (1-5, R, RBI, SB) followed with a base hit that scored Cheney to tie the game, Rodriguez would later advance to second on a infield ground ball out. After junior right fielder Randy Adams (1-3, 2 R, 2 BB, 2B) drew a two out walk, Rodriguez would steal third to give TU runners on the corners with two outs. Sophomore pinch hitter Tyler Braddock (1-1, RBI) gave TU the lead with a single scoring Rodriguez and advancing Adams to third. Senior catcher Mike Griffin (2-5, 2 RBI) followed with a base hit to score Adams and increase the TU advantage to 8-6. Junior pitcher Steven Brooker (1-1) came out of the pen for the save opportunity but would give up three runs in 2/3 of an inning for the loss.
Thomas returns home for a double header against Florida College on Saturday April 19 beginning at 12PM.
Night Hawks Sweep Weekend Series

The Night Hawks (23-18) completed a sweep of the three game series against Tennessee Temple University (13-27) by winning both ends of a double header, 4-3 & 13-6, after winning the opening game on Friday evening 7-5.
On Friday night junior pitcher Chris Poulos (5-2) picked up the victory going eight innings and allowing five runs, two earned, while striking out five. Freshman closer Sean Medlin pitched the ninth for his third save of the year. TU committed two errors leading to three unearned runs. Sophomore right fielder Ruben Rodriguez (4-4, 2 R, SB) had four hits while senior catcher Mike Griffin (1-4, 2 RBI) and senior shortstop Ken Zarillo (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B) each drove in two runs.
TU came from behind for the victory in game one of the Saturday afternoon double header. Down by one after six, Thomas would tie the game in the seventh then get the walk off victory with a run in the ninth. The Night Hawks only managed three hits in the game but took advantage of ten walks by the TTU pitching staff and used aggressive base running, stealing four bases, to make the hits count. Junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (1-3, R, RBI, HR) hit his fourth home run of the year and sophomore center fielder Brett Huett (1-2, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 SB) scored two runs for TU. Junior relief pitcher Steven Brooker (1-0) picked up the victory out of the pen tossing 1 1/3 innings of hitless ball.
Thomas completed the series sweep with a explosive13-6 victory in game three. TU stung TTU for fourteen hits including two home runs. The Night Hawks used a seven run fifth inning to put the game away. Huett (2-4, 3 R, 4 RBI, HR) drove in four runs while smacking a home run and junior right fielder Randy Adams (2-3, R, 3 RBI, HR) drove in three and hit his team leading eighth home run off the year. Sophomore starting pitcher Cody Walden (3-1) picked up his third victory of the year going 5 2/3 innings allowing six runs (three earned).
A trip to Mt. Vernon, GA on Tuesday April 15 to face Brewton Parker College next awaits the Night Hawks. First pitch for the single game is set for 4PM.
SHC Sweeps TU

Spring Hill College (16-26) swept a Tuesday afternoon double header, 5-4 & 8-2, from the visiting Thomas University Night Hawks (20-18) in Mobile, AL.
TU returns to Varnedoe Stadium and welcomes Tennessee Temple University for a three game series beginning with a single game on Friday April 11 at 6PM.

Hurricanes Blow Away Night Hawks

TU (20-16) was blown away 11-1 by the Georgia Southwestern State University Hurricanes (12-23) on Wednesday afternoon in Americus, GA. GSW used an 8 run second inning to secure the win from TU starting pitcher Chris Poulos. Bret Huett and Matthew Blanton each had 2 hits, and Mike Griffin doubled and scored the lone Night Hawk run.
The Night Hawks continue their road swing in Mobile, AL on Tuesday April 8 with a double header against Spring Hill College. First pitch of game one is set for 4PM.
Night Hawks and Badgers Split

The Night Hawks (20-15) and the visiting Spring Hill College Badgers (12-25) split a Tuesday afternoon double header, 2-3 & 13-5, at Varnedoe Stadium.
In the opener, Cody Whitlock took his second loss of the year, giving up all 3 runs, while striking out 10 in 4 1/3 innings. Ruben Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI, while Mike Vitello doubled and scored for the Night Hawks.
In game two, TU scored early and often, plating 11 runs in the first 3 innings to cruise to the victory. Tyler Braddock hit a 3-run HR, and Randy Adams added a HR and 4 RBI to secure the win for TU starter Lou Pepper. Pepper pitched 6 innings, striking out 2 for his 4th win of 2008.
Thomas hits the road tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Americus, GA to face off with the Georgia Southwestern University Hurricanes in a single game beginning at 5PM.
Sweep Extends Winning Streak To Four

A double header sweep of Florida College, 9-3 & 12-7, on Saturday afternoon in Temple Terrace, FL extended the Night Hawks (19-14) winning streak to four.
The Night Hawks scored five runs in the fifth inning and three in the seventh of the game one victory while collecting ten hits. Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Braddock (2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR) drove in three and hit a home run. Senior starting pitcher Kyle Palmer (2-4) picked up his second victory allowing three runs, two earned, in six innings.
Sophomore starting pitcher Cody Walden (2-1) battled on the mound for the game two victory after allowing six runs, four earned, on eleven hits in five innings pitched. Junior second baseman Mike Vitello (3-3, R, 3 RBI) drove in three while senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (1-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, SB) and sophomore center fielder Brett Huett (3-5, R, 2 RBI, 2B) each drove in two.
TU will be back at Varnedoe Stadium on Tuesday April 1, as they welcome Spring Hill College for a double header beginning at 3PM.
Night Hawks Sweep Clearwater Christian

The Thomas University Night Hawks (17-14) traveled to Clearwater, FL and swept a doubleheader, 4-3 & 13-3, from the host Clearwater Christian College Cougars (2-18) on Friday night.
Sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (0-1, 2 RBI, BB, SF) drove in two runs in the game one victory. Junior starting pitcher Chris Poulos (4-1) picked up his fourth victory of the year after going seven innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits. TU committed four errors that accounted for two unearned runs.
In game two, TU racked out twelve hits and picked up seven base on balls in a dominating victory. Junior starting pitcher Scott Mancauskas (2-1) went six innings in the victory and allowed three earned runs while striking out seven. Senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (2-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, HR) hit a home run and drove in two while junior designated hitter Mike Edwards (2-2, 3 RBI) drove in three.
Thomas continues their road trip tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against Florida College beginning at 12PM in Temple Terrace, FL.
TU Splits With WIU In Region 14 Double Header

TU (15-14) split a region 14 double header, 4-3 & 11-1, against the visiting Webber International University Warriors (21-16) on Wednesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
A one out single by sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (1-3, R, 2 RBI) in the bottom of the fifth drove in two runs breaking a 1-1 tie and propelling TU to victory in game one. Senior third baseman Ken Zarillo (2-3, R, 2B) scored after leading off with a single and would later advance to third on a WIU error on a bunt by junior second baseman Mike Vitello (0-2, R) that placed runners on second and third with no outs. After advancing to third, on a double by senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (1-3, 2B), Rodriguez would score on a RBI ground out by junior first baseman Matt Blanton (0-3, RBI). The run would prove to be the difference as WIU scored twice in the ninth but was unable to tie the game. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock (5-1) had another stellar performance on the mound for TU going all seven and allowing three earned runs while striking out seven.
WIU pitcher Jonathan Zunz allowed only one earned run in a six inning game two "Run Rule" victory. TU managed seven hits but committed four errors, accounting for four unearned runs. Sophomore Jonathan Rossi (1-1, RBI) drove in the Night Hawks only run with a RBI single in the sixth. Junior starting pitcher Lou Pepper (3-4) took the loss after allowing eight runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings pitched.
Thomas will next hit the road for a double header in Clearwater, FL against Clearwater Christian College on Friday March 28. First pitch is set for 5PM.
VSU Drops TU

NCAA DII Valdosta State University Blazers (20-10) dropped the host Thomas University Night Hawks (14-13), 15-12, on Tuesday evening at Varnedoe Stadium.
TU held a two run lead entering the sixth but the Blazers scored five runs to take a 14-11 lead. The Night Hawks would get within two before Valdosta added another insurance run in the ninth and held on in the bottom of the inning for the win. Down 5-0 in the first, TU tied the game with a grand slam by sophomore designated hitter Tyler Braddock (3-4, 5 RBI, R, HR, SF). After giving up the lead, the Night Hawks would retake the lead, 10-8, in the fourth with a three run home run by junior first baseman Matt Blanton (2-4, 4 RBI, 3 R, 2B, HR, BB, SF). Both teams would exchange runs in the fifth and VSU would take over in the fifth. Sophomore relief pitcher Cody Walden (1-1) took the loss after tossing four innings and allowing five earned runs.
The Night Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they welcome Webber International University to Varnedoe Stadium for a region 14 double header beginning at 2PM.
TU Splits With NAIA #20 ERAU

TU (14-12) split a region 14 double header, 8-3 & 0-4, on Saturday afternoon with the visiting NAIA #20 Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles (19-9)at Varnedoe Stadium.
Thomas scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead, after trailing by a run, then scored another insurance run in the game one victory. Sophomore designated hitter Jonathan Rossi (1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR) and senior catcher Mike Griffin (2-3, R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR) each had a home run to help lead the TU bats. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock (4-1) picked up the win going all seven while allowing three earned runs and striking out five.
ERAU pitcher Jordan Roberts held TU to only three hits in game two and struck out twelve in a dominant performance. Senior starting pitcher Kyle Palmer (1-4) took the tough loss after pitching well and only allowing two earned runs on three hits in six innings pitched while striking out six.
The Night Hawks return to the diamond on Tuesday March 25 as they welcome to Varnedoe Stadium NCAA DII Valdosta State University for a single game beginning at 5PM.
Night Hawks Drop Two

Thomas University (13-11) dropped a two team double header on Wednesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium. TU dropped a tough extra inning game to Berry College (19-9) 5-3 in game one and then fell to Belhaven College (21-8) 8-3.
In the top of the eighth Berry broke a 3-3 tie with two runs and then held of TU in the bottom half of the inning for the win. Sophomore center fielder Ruben Rodriguez (0-3, RBI, BB) and junior right fielder Randy Adams (2-4, RBI) each drove in a run in the losing effort. Junior starting pitcher Lou Pepper (3-2) took the loss after a solid outing. Pepper went 7 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, two earned, on eleven hits while striking out ten.
Belhaven scored six times in the top of the first and never looked back scoring two more times in their half of the third for the victory. The Night Hawks managed runs in the first and second but it would not be enough. Rodriguez (3-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B) had three hits and a two runs batted in for TU. The Night Hawk gloves committed three errors resulting in six unearned runs for Belhaven. Junior starting pitcher Chris Poulos (3-1) took the loss for TU. Poulos went four innings and allowed all eight runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out four.
TU returns to region 14 action on Saturday March 22 as they welcome Embry Riddle University for an afternoon double header beginning at 2PM. Saturday is Fan Appreciation Day at Varnedoe Stadium, all fans are invited to a BBQ hosted by Goal Line Ministries.
Berry Ends TU Win Streak

The Berry College Vikings (17-9) ended TU's (13-9) three game win streak with a 6-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
With the scored notched at two after three, BC broke out with four runs over the next three innings to put the game away. TU got a run back in their half of the sixth but it would not be enough. The Night Hawks only managed six hits against the Vikings. Sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR) made the most of his one hit with a third inning home run that temporarily tied the game. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock (3-1) took his first loss of the year after going four innings and allowing four earned runs.
Thomas will be back on the diamond tomorrow as the face Berry in game one of a two team double header. TU will then face Belhaven College who lost this afternoon to the Vikings. First pitch of game one is set for 1PM.
TU Comes From Behind To Beat ASU

TU (13-8) scored thirteen runs in the top of the eighth to come from behind and defeat the NCAA DII Albany State University Rams, 17-7, in Albany, GA.
Down 7-1 in their half of the eighth the Night Hawks scored thirteen runs, eleven with two outs, in route to the victory. The big hit for TU came from junior right fielder Randy Adams (1-3, 4 RBI, HR, 2 BB) who hit a grand slam, his team leading sixth home run, during the inning. Senior shortstop Ken Zarillo (5-5) had five hits on the night for TU. Junior pitcher Lou Pepper (3-2) picked up the victory throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings out of the pen. The win was the third in a row for Thomas.
The Night Hawks will now await a visit from Berry College on Tuesday March 18 for a single beginning at 2PM.
Night Hawks Defeat NCAA DII VSU

The Night Hawks (12-8) defeated the NCAA DII Valdosta State University Blazers (13-7-1), 7-5, in a rain shortened game at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, GA.
Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, TU took the lead scoring three runs on two hits and benefiting from a walk and a hit batsman. Junior right fielder Randy Adams (2-4, R, 2B) scored the first run of the inning on a fielders choice off the bat of sophomore center fielder Brett Huett (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB). Sophomore designated hitter Jonathan Rossi (0-2, R) would then score the go ahead run on a base hit by sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (2-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B). Huett would then give the Night Hawks some insurance scoring on a wild pitch. The rain would come in the eight forcing the game to be called. Junior Chris Poulos improved his record to 3-0 going all seven innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out eight. TU overcame two errors while the Blazers committed three.
Thomas will next travel to Albany, GA to face Albany State University on Thursday March 13. First pitch is set for 6PM.
TU Drops EWC

Thomas (11-8) knocked out fourteen runs on eighteen hits in a 14-4 run rule victory over Edward Waters College (18-7) in region 14 action on Monday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Sophomore center fielder Brett Huett (3-4, 2 R, RBI) had three hits while senior catcher Mike Griffin (3-5, R, 4 RBI, HR) drove in four runs and hit a home run. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock (3-0) struck out nine batters in the victory increasing his team lead to 54. Whitlock went seven innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits. The Night Hawks were able to overcome three errors in the victory.
The Night Hawks will next travel to Valdosta, GA to face NCAA DII Valdosta State University on Tuesday March 11 at 5PM.
St. Ambrose Takes WSC Invitational

The Thomas University Night Hawks (10-8) dropped the championship game of the Warner Southern Invitational to the NAIA #22 St. Ambrose University Bees (7-2), 11-1, on Saturday afternoon in Lake Wales, FL.
In a five inning run rule game the TU bats could not put together a significant rally and scored their only run of the game in their last at bat in the bottom of the fifth. Junior pinch hitter Mike Edwards (1-1, R, RBI, HR) drove in the only run of the game for the Night Hawks with a home run in the fifth. Three TU pitchers were touched up for a combined eleven runs, ten earned, on nine hits including three home runs. Junior starting pitched Brian Basford (0-1) took the loss lasting only two innings and allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits.
TU will return to the diamond on Monday March 10 as they welcome region 14 foe Edward Waters College. First pitch is set for 2PM.
TU Sweeps Again

TU (10-7) swept another two team double header at the Warner Southern Invitational in Lake Wales, FL. In game one the Night Hawks knocked off NAIA #11 Bellevue College (10-8) 1-0, then defeated Walsh University (4-5) 9-7 to qualify for the championship game on Saturday.
In a pitchers duel that had both teams combine for only five hits, TU was able to come up with the single run of the game in their half of the third when senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (0-3, R) scored on a fielders choice after reaching base on a Bellevue error. Junior starting pitcher Lou Pepper (2-2) picked up the victory with the complete game shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out three.

Night Hawks Sweep Two Team Double Header

The Thomas University Night Hawks (8-7) swept a two team double header on Thursday at the Warner Southern College Invitational in Lake Wales, FL. TU mercy ruled Bethel College (2-5) 11-0 in five innings then beat region 14 foe Warner Southern College (14-8) 5-1 in a rain shortened six inning game.
Bethel committed four errors that led to four unearned runs in a dominant victory by TU in game one. Senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (1-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, SB) led the way with three runs batted in. Junior first baseman Matt Blanton (1-2, R, 2 RBI, SF) and sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (3-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, SB) tacked on two RBI's as well. BC only managed one hit off of junior starting pitcher Chris Poulos (2-0), who went all five and struck out four in the victory.
In game two the Night Hawks picked up a much needed regional victory by beating WSC and the rain. After three scoreless innings TU broke through in the fourth when senior catcher Mike Griffin (1-2, R, RBI, 2B) doubled to left scoring Cheney (1-3, R) who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on an infield single. Before the rain came TU got some much needed insurance runs in the top of the sixth scoring four on two hits and two WSC errors. Senior starting pitcher Kyle Palmer (1-3) picked up his first victory of the year going all six innings and allowing one earned run on three hits.
Action at the WSC Invitational continues on Friday with another two team double header. TU will face Bellevue College at 9:30AM then face off against Walsh College at 1PM.
WIU Walk Off HR Knocks Off TU In 10

A Walk Off HR in the bottom of the tenth by the host Webber International University Warriors (16-9) knocked off the TU Night Hawks (6-7), 3-2, in a region 14 game in Babson Park, FL.
With TU down by one, Sophomore pinch hitter Jonathan Rossi tied the game at two in the seventh. Both teams pitchers dominated the game with only a combined 7 hits but it was WIU that came up clutch with the walk off HR in the bottom of the tenth. Junior relief pitcher Scott Mancauskas (1-1) going 1 2/3 innings and allowing a HR. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock was dominant once again striking out fifteen in eight innings pitched allowing two runs, one earned. He now has 45 strike outs in 33 2/3 innings pitched this season. The Night Hawks are now 0-3 in region 14 play.
TU will be back on the diamond on Thursday March 6 playing in the Warner Southern College Invitational. Thomas will face Bethel College in game one beginning at 12:30PM. The Night Hawks will then face off with region 14 foe Warner Southern College in game two. First pitch of game two is set for 3:30PM.
Adams Slams Saints

The Thomas University Night Hawks (6-6) used a grand slam by junior right fielder Randy Adams (1-4, R, 4 RBI, HR) in the bottom of the fifth to slam the visiting Sienna Heights University Saints (0-1), 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Sienna took a 2-0 lead in their half of the third but a sacrifice squeeze bunt by sophomore left fielder Ruben Rodriguez (1-4, RBI) in the bottom half of the inning scored junior second baseman Mike Vitello (1-2, R, RBI) to make it a one run game. The Saints extended their lead to three in their half of the fourth but TU came back once again with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to keep it a one run game. Thomas tied the game in the fifth with a run scoring double by junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (1-4, R, RBI, 2B) and would take the lead with Adams grand slam to left field. SHS would get a run back in their half of the seventh and TU would tack on another for the 9-5 victory. The Night Hawks used nine pitchers in the game, one per inning, and combined for five runs (three earned) on five hits. Sophomore pitcher Cody Walden (1-0) picked up the victory with an inning of scoreless and hitless work.
Thomas will return to region 14 play this coming Tuesday March 4 as they travel to Babson Park, FL for a single game versus Webber International University. First pitch is set for 7PM.
Baseball Game Versus Albany State Cancelled Due To Weather

Today's baseball game between Thomas University and Albany State University at Varnedoe Stadium has been cancelled due to weather. The game has been rescheduled for a date yet to be announced.
TU will be back in action on Saturday March 1 as they host Sienna Heights University at Varnedoe Stadium in a single game beginning at 12PM.
Thomas Knocks Off Brewton Parker

Thomas University (5-6) knocked off the visiting Brewton Parker College Barons (5-3), 10-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Junior right fielder Randy Adams (3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 HR) drove in three runs and hit two home runs to help lead TU over BPC. He now leads the team in home runs with three. Junior relief pitcher Scott Mancauskas (1-0) picked up the victory throwing the final 6 1/3 innings out of the Night Hawk pen, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits. Senior catcher Mike Griffin (2-3, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, HR) and sophomore designated hitter Tyler Braddock (1-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, HR) each added a home run and two runs batted in.
TU will look to get back to .500 on Tuesday February 26 as they welcome the Albany State University Rams to Varnedoe Stadium for a single game beginning at 4PM.
Night Hawks Split With Lions

The Night Hawks (4-6) split a Saturday afternoon double header, 0-8 & 7-2, on Saturday afternoon in Franklin Springs, GA against the host Emmanuel College Lions (4-7).
In game one the TU bats were held silent and managed only four hits against the Lions pitcher Jonathan Douglas. Senior catcher Mike Griffen (2-3) had two hits and junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (0-3) saw his eight game hitting streak come to an end. The Night Hawks senior starting pitcher Kyle Palmer saw his record drop to 0-3 allowing seven runs, six earned, in five innings pitched.
TU came out swinging hot bats once again in game two scoring three runs in top of the first for the early lead. Up by two entering the fifth the Night Hawks put the game away scoring four runs on three hits. Senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (1-3, 2R, 2B, BB) led off with a double. After advancing to third on an infield hit by Griffin (1-2, RBI, BB), Cheney would score on an error by an Emmanuel infielder. With two runners on and one out, junior right fielder Randy Adams (1-2, R, 4 RBI, BB, HR) would put the game away with a soaring three run blast over the left field fence helping to secure the series victory for the Night Hawks. Junior starting pitcher Chris Poulos (1-0) went 6 2/3 innings for the victory, allowing two earned runs on ten hits while striking out seven.
Thomas will next welcome Brewton Parker College to Varnedoe Stadium on Tuesday February 19. First pitch is set for 3PM.
TU Bats Come Alive In Victory

Off to a slow start in the first seven games this season, the TU (3-5) bats came alive scoring fourteen runs on eleven hits in a 14-5 battering of the host Emmanuel College Lions (3-6) in Franklin Springs, GA. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock (2-0) picked up the victory while setting a school record for strikeouts in a game with 16.
Down by one in the top of the second the Night Hawks exploded for five runs on three hits, taking a 7-3 lead and never looking back. Whitlock took care of the rest going 8 1/3 innings while allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits. In one stretch the senior recorded seven consecutive outs via strikeout. Senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (2-6, R) and sophomore designated hitter Tyler Braddock (2-5, R, 2B, HR) each drove in three runs. The Night Hawks got back to back home runs in the ninth from senior cather Mike Griffin (2-5, R, RBI, HR) and Braddock while junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (1-6, R, RBI, 2B) extended his hitting streak to eight games with a double in the first inning. Emmanuel committed six errors in the game accounting for seven unearned runs. The eleven hits, was the highest output of the young season for the TU lineup.
The Night Hawks continue their series with the Lions on Saturday afternoon in Franklin Springs with a double header beginning at 12PM.
Cavaliers Sweep Series From Night Hawks

The Montreat College Cavaliers (3-2) swept a three game series from TU (2-5), winning game three 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Montreat pitcher Jonathon Madera pitched six innings of three hit ball and struck out six Night Hawks for the victory. TU fell behind early and was not able to get their first hit offf Madera till the bottom of the fourth. Down 5-0 in the sixth, senior third baseman Stephen Chaney drove a ball to over the left field fence to get the Night Hawks on the board. MC would once again extend their lead with two runs in the seventh but TU would rally in their half of the seventh when they scored three runs on four hits, to get within three, but left two critical men on base. The Cavaliers tacked on four more runs in their last two at bats to wrap up the game and the series sweep. Junior starting pitcher Louis Pepper (1-2) took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out four Cavaliers. Junior right fielder Randy Adams went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in for the Night Hawks. With a base hit in the sixth, junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (1-4) extended his hitting streak to seven games. He is the only Night Hawk to hit in all seven games so far this season. The TU defense committed five errors on the day.
TU will hit the road again with a trip to Franklin Springs, GA on Friday February 15 to face Emmanual College in a three game series. First pitch for game one is set for 4PM.
Montreat Sweeps TU

In a Saturday afternoon double header at Varnedoe Stadium, the visiting Montreat College Cavaliers (2-2) swept the host Thomas University Night Hawks (2-4), 3-2 & 4-3.
The Cavaliers took an exciting game one in extra innings edging the Night Hawks in ten innings. Both teams exchanged scoreless innings through seven until MC broke through with two runs in their half of the eighth to take a 2-0 lead. Down two, TU junior second baseman Mike Vitello (0-2, R, 2 BB) got the bottom half of the inning started with a lead off walk. With one out and a runner still on, senior catcher Mike Griffin (1-3, RBI, 3B, BB)launched a triple to deep center bringing home Vitello and cutting the deficit to one. Junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (1-4, RBI) would follow with a single to shallow center, extending his hitting streak to five games, driving in sophomore pinch runner Daniel Joiner to tie the game at two. Thomas would strand the game winning run at first. In the top of the 9th, Montreat would plate the eventual game winning run off freshman pitcher Sean Medlin (0-1) who took the loss in relief after lasting 1 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits. TU would go get a runner on first in the bottom half of the inning but he would not advance beyond first. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock threw seven shutout innings allowing five hits and striking out seven in the no decision.
With TU down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Blanton (1-3, R, RBI, HR) would extend his hitting streak to six with a game tying homerun to left field. Montreat would regain the lead in their half of the seventh with a run off senior starting pitcher (0-2) Kyle Palmer who went all seven in the losing effort. Senior third baseman Stephen Chaney went 2-4 with a run scored for the Night Hawks.
Thomas will conclude their series with Montreat in a single game on Sunday afternoon at 12PM.
8-5 Victory Gives TU Series Sweep

The Night Hawks (2-2) scored three runs in their half of the eighth to break a 5-5 tie and lead them to a 8-5 victory and a sweep of the two game series against the visiting Loyola University Wolfpack (0-7) on Wednesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Senior third baseman Stephen Cheney (1-5) and junior right fielder Randy Adams (1-3, 2 R, BB) each drove in two runs to help lead TU. Junior relief pitcher Louis Pepper picked up the victory in relief of junior starting pitcher Chris Poulos ( 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, 2 SO) pitching four shutout innings, allowing only two hits.
TU will next host Montreat College at Varnedoe Stadium in a three game series beginning with a double header on Saturday February 9. First pitch is set for 12PM.
TU Edges Loyola In Home Opener

TU (1-2) edged the visiting Loyola University Wolfpack (0-6), 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
The Night Hawks scored four runs in their half of the first and then tacked on two more in the fifth and one in the eighth to hold on for the one run victory. TU held the lead from start to finish. Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock (1-0) threw four shutout innings while striking out four and allowing four hits for the victory. Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Braddock swung a hot bat for TU going 2-5 and driving in three runs. Junior first baseman Matthew Blanton (2-5, 2R, RBI) and senior shortstop Ken Zarillo (2-4) each had tow hits as well.
Thomas will conclude their series with the Wolfpack tomorrow afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium with a single game scheduled to begin at 1PM.
Baseball Swept By Edward Waters

The Edward Waters College Tigers (2-0) swept a Sunday afternoon double header, 5-4 & 5-2, from the visiting Thomas University Night Hawks (0-2) in Jacksonville, FL.
Junior relief pitcher Lou Pepper (0-1) took the tough loss in game one allowing four runs, only one earned. The Night Hawks offense was led sophomore center fielder Ruben Rodriguez (1-4, 2 RBI) and junior second baseman Mike Vitello (2-3). Senior starting pitcher Cody Whitlock went 5 1/3 innings allowing one earned run in the no decision.
In game two, the TU bats were held to three hits by the EWC pitching staff. Junior first baseman Matthew Blanton went 1-2 and drove in a run. Senior Kyle Palmer (0-1) took the loss but was not helped much by his defense allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings, all unearned.
TU will look to rebound on Tuesday February 5 at 4PM, as they welcome the Loyola University Wolfpack to Varnedoe Stadium for their 2008 home opener.
Season Opener Rained Out

Thomas University Baseball will have to wait one more day for their 2008 regular season opener. Rain in the Jacksonville area caused a rain out of Saturday's rain out versus the host Edward Waters College. TU will double up against EWC tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1PM.
