Karl Barton is Professor of Music and Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences at Thomas University, where he has been teaching since 1996. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he earned his Doctor of Music degree in flute performance, a Master of Music degree in historical musicology and certificates in early music and world music at Florida State University where he studied flute with Charles DeLaney and ethnic flute traditions with Dale Olsen and Ming Li. He also earned a Master of Music degree in flute performance from the University of Akron where he studied with George Pope and a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz performance from Duquesne University where he studied flute with Wendy Webb Kumer and jazz with Eric Kloss. He regularly performs with the flute, violin and cello trio “Music’s Delight” and the salsa-jazz group “Latin Attitude,” and he has performed in the flute masterclasses of Marcel Moyse, William Bennett, Bernard Goldberg, Ransom Wilson and Stephen Preston.
