Fast Facts

  • A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can, in as little as 60 days. That's closed loop recycling at its finest!

  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.

  • There is no limit to the amount of times aluminum can be recycled.

  • In 2012, the U.S. generated 3.412 million tons of e-waste. Of this amount, only 1 million tons or 29.2 % was recycled. The rest was trashed in landfills or incinerators.

  • For every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered to reduce extraction of raw metals from the earth.

  • Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year.

  • One metric ton of circuit boards can contain 40 to 800 times the amount of gold and 30 to 40 times the amount of copper mined from one metric ton of ore in the US.
