Tough Battle on Senior Day

October 13, 2013

The Lady Night Hawks (7-4. 4-1) fought a hard battle on senior day falling, 3-1, against NAIA #5 Northwood University (10-1, 6-0) on Sunday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex.

Northwood opened a 2-0 lead in the first half. Down by two entering the second half, TU raised their level of pressure in the final 45 minutes firing 10 shots (3 on goal). Senior midfielder Carina Spengler made it a one goal game when she converted a penalty kick but NU would put the game away with a third goal.

Seven of TU’s Women Soccer players played their last game at the TU Soccer Complex today and were honored prior to kickoff for their years of contribution to the program. Six of these seniors were a part of a 2010 team that secured the first post season bid for the program since 2004. They will finish their career having seeking to reach post season play in all four years of their career. Senior Carina Spangler leads the team in goals with 10 and points with 21. Her career at TU is one that will be missed with her three previous years she has scored 17 goals, 7 assist, and 41 points. Senior defender Hannah Claesson has 7 career goals, 8 career assist and 22 points. Kasey Cooper a senior defender does a good job locking down the TU defense and has 4 assist in her career. Senior defender Lindsay Moore played great defense in her career for the Lady Night Hawks and started 30 games on the backline. Defender Hjalmdis Vilhjalmsdottir has played in 39 games in her career. Emma Hewett a senior forward has scored 15 goals, had 9 assist with 39 total points in her career. Deanna Rivet the senior goalie has played in 2437:32 minutes throughout her career at TU with 115 saves to only 48 goals allowed. The senior class has been a major part of the Lady Night Hawks rise and will be greatly missed.

With the loss TU falls back into a tie for first place in the TSC northern division. Thomas women’s soccer will be back in action Thursday October 17 when they travel to Lakeland, FL for an important Sun Conference clash against Southeastern University at 7 PM.
