TU Softball Ends Season on Winning Note

April 20, 2010

TU Softball (15-30) ended their season on a winning note by sweeping the visiting Brewton Parker College Barons in a Tuesday afternoon double header at Armory Field.

In game one, TU was led by a strong pitching performance by junior Christina Skulas (5-10) as she picked up her fifth victory of the season in the 3-1 win. Senior shortstop Rachel Canganelli (1-1, RBI, 2BB) drove in a run and freshman outfielder Kortney Campbell (1-2, 2RBI) drove in two. Senior starting pitcher Courtney Scruggs (6-12) finished her career as a Lady Night Hawk with a 6-0 shutout in game two.

Softball ends their regular season with a four game winning streak and will begin preparations for the 2011 season after failing to qualify for the 2010 A.I.I. Softball Tournament in Texas.

 

Lady Night Hawks Defeat Talladega on Senior Day

The Lady Night Hawks (13-30) defeated the visiting Talladega College Tornadoes (10-16), 6-1, this afternoon on Senior Day at Armory Field.

After an hour delay due to travel difficulties for the Tornadoes, the game got started and TU made sure to send off their five seniors in a winning way. Junior second baseman Brook Brown (2-3, 3RBI, HR, 2SB) did her part for the seniors with a three run home run. Fellow junior Danielle Valentino (2-3) pitched in with two hits of her own. Senior starting pitcher Courtney Scruggs (5-12) picked up the victory after tossing six innings and allowing one run. After the game, the five seniors were honored for their contributions to the Lady Night Hawks softball team. Scruggs (LaGrange, GA), catcher Maggie Allen (Gulfport, FL), shortstop Rachel Canganelli (Ocala, FL),  outfielder Amanda Graham (New Port Richey, FL) and first baseman Kenna Hickman (Marianna, FL) have been a solid part of this program and will be missed. "We thank them for all that they have done for this program and wish them the best of luck in the future", said TU Head Coach Bill Wilson.

Due to the travel delay for Talladega, game two of the double header was cancelled. TU will look to end their regular season on a winning streak and win the two final games of the five seniors careers at Armory Field on Tuesday afternoon April 20 when they welcome Brewton Parker College for a double header beginning at 2PM.

 

Split Weekend Road Trip for TU

TU (12-30) split their four game weekend road trip, going 2-2 in  Mobile, AL.

The road trip started with a Friday evening double header at the NAIA #25 University of Mobile Rams (28-15). TU dropped game one 7-1. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-12) took the loss. Thomas bounced back to take game two 6-2 behind a strong pitching performance by junior Christina Skulas (4-10). Senior shortstop Rachel Canganelli (3-4, 2R, 2B) had three hits, while senior third baseman Kenna Hickman (2-4, R, 2RBI, SB) and freshman designated player Katelynn Knight (2-3, R, RBI, BB) each had two hits in the game.

This afternoon TU dropped the early game against the Spring Hill College Badgers (16-21) 9-0 in a five inning run rule game. Scruggs (4-13) lost her thirteenth game of the year. In game two the Lady Night Hawks won a nine inning thriller on a game winning RBI by junior second baseman Brook Brown (2-5, RBI), topping SHC 7-6. Canganelli (3-5, HR, RBI) put the Lady Night Hawks in a position to win the game with an 8th inning RBI but the Badgers bounced back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Skulas (5-10) picked up the victory for TU.

The ladies will close out the 2010 regular season with a six game homestand. TU will get things started with a double header against Warner University on Thursday April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 4PM.

 

Lady Night Hawks and Brevard Split Double Header

The Lady Night Hawks (10-28) and the NCAA DII Brevard College Tornados (15-18) split a Saturday afternoon double header at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, GA.

Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (3-10) took the loss in a 5-2 game one loss. TU topped the Tornados 6-4 in game two. Junior second baseman Brook Brown (3-4, 2HR) hit two home runs in the game. Skulas (4-10) picked up the victory.

TU will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Mobile, AL to face the NAIA #24 University of Mobile Rams on Friday April 9 in a double header beginning at 7PM EST.

 

Softball Splits with Truett

April 2, 2010

Softball (9-27) split a double header with the host Truett-McConnell College Bears (20-16) on Friday evening in Cleveland, GA.

TU dropped the opener 7-1. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-11) took the loss. In game two, junior pitcher Christina Skulas (3-9) picked up the victory with a complete game two hit shutout. Senior catcher Maggie Allen (1-3, RBI) drove in the game winning run.

The Lady Night Hawks continue their road trip with a neutral site double header tomorrow against Brevard College in Cleveland, GA beginning at 1PM.

 

NAIA #18 SCAD Bees Sting TU

March 27, 2010

NAIA #18 Savannah College of Art & Design Bees (23-9) stung TU (8-26), sweeping a double header on Saturday afternoon in Savannah, GA.

In game one SCAD defeated the Lady Night Hawks 4-1 limiting TU to only one hit. Freshman Ashley Werschmidt (2-5) took the loss after tossing only one inning and allowing two earned runs on one hit, while walking two. A two run home run in the top of the third by senior shortstop Rachel Canganelli (2-4, 2R, 2RBI, HR) gave TU a 4-1 lead in game two. SCAD got a run back in the fourth to make it a two run ball game but the Lady Night Hawks struck back, stretching their lead once again to three on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Maggie Allen (0-2, 2RBI, 2SF). The Bees scored three in the bottom of the inning to notch the game at five and went on to score three in their half of the sixth for the 8-5 victory and double header sweep. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-10) took the loss out of the bullpen, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits in only one inning pitched.

The Lady Night Hawks will next travel to Cleveland, GA on Friday April 2 to face Truett-McConnell College in a double header beginning at 4PM.

 

Lady Night Hawks Swept

 March 20, 2010

The Lady Night Hawks (8-24) were swept in day two of the TU Invitational.

Spring Hill College (11-13) held TU to four hits in a 2-1 win. Freshman centerfielder Kortney Campbell (2-4) had two hits in the game. Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (2-9) took the loss. In game two Louisiana State University - Alexandria (5-20) shut out TU 5-0. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-9) lost her ninth game of the year.

TU will next travel to Savannah, GA on Saturday March 27 to take on Savannah College of Art & Design in a double header scheduled to begin at 2PM.

 

Thomas Softball Loses Two

 March 19, 2010

Thomas softball (8-22) lost two games on Friday evening in day one of Thomas University Invitational at Remington Park.

In game one TU fell to Spring College (9-13) 4-2. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-8) took the loss on the mound. The Lady Night Hawks fought tough in their second game of the day but fell to Louisiana State University - Alexandria (4-19) 7-6. Scruggs (4-9) once again took the loss in relief.

Action continues tomorrow in the Thomas University Invitational with TU facing SHC at 12PM and LSU-A at 2PM. SHC and LSU-A will open up the day with a game at 10AM. All games tomorrow will be played at Armory Field.

 

TU Splits in Last Day of Orange Beach Tournament

TU (8-20) split in their last day of participation in the Orange Beach Tournament in Orange Beach, AL.

Softball opened their last day with a 12-11 victory over fellow independent Louisiana State University - Alexandria Generals (2-17). Senior Kenna Hickman (3-4, HR) had three hits and a home run. Junior Brook Brown (3-3, BB) had three hits and freshman Alyssa Bork (2-3, HR) had a home run of her own along with two hits. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-7) picked up the win on the mound. In game two, NAIA #6 William Carey University (14-5) dominated TU in a 14-3 run rule victory. Freshman pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (2-4) took the loss. Senior Jordan Thomas (1-1, R, RBI) hit a solo home run.

After more than a month on the road TU returns home on Friday March 19 to host Spring Hill College (4PM) and LSU-A (8PM). At 6PM SHC and LSU-A will face off. All games will be played at Remington Park. The three teams will have another round robin on Saturday beginning at 10AM. Saturday's games will be played at Armory Field.

 

Lady Night Hawks Split

The Lady Night Hawks (7-19) split their two games this afternoon at the Orange Beach Tournament in Orange Beach, AL.

TU was defeated 8-3 by the Belhaven University Blazers (19-2) in game one. Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (2-8) was the losing pitcher. The Lady Night Hawks bounced back to defeat the Park University Pirates (9-3), 10-3, in the afternoon game. With the win TU ended a three game losing streak. Five players had three hits a piece for Thomas: senior Maggie Allen (3-4), senior Kenna Hickman (3-4), junior Brook Brown (3-4), freshman Kortney Campbell (3-4) and freshman Katelynn Knight (3-4). Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (3-7) picked up the victory on the mound.

Softball continues play at the Orange Beach tournament tomorrow with an elimination game against an opponent that has yet to be determined.

 

Thomas Loses Two In Day One of Orange Beach

Thomas softball (6-18) lost both games in day one of the Orange Beach Tournament in Orange Beach, AL.

In game one action NAIA #10 St. Gregory's University (8-4) defeated TU 4-3 in eight innings. Junior Brook Brown (1-3, HR) hit a home run and drove in a run. Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (2-7) took the loss on the mound. Things did not get any easier in game two for TU, facing NAIA #18 Auburn University - Montgomery (12-5-1). The Lady Night Hawks led 4-2 in the fifth but AUM exploded for five runs to take a 7-2 lead. TU would get two runs back but would eventually fall 7-4. Brown (1-2, HR, HBP) hit her second home run of the day in the losing effort. Freshman pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (2-3) took the loss.

Day two action tomorrow at Orange Beach will pit TU up against Belhaven College (10AM EST) and Park University (2PM EST).

 

TU Sweeps Edward Waters

 March 6, 2010

TU (6-16) swept Edward Waters College in a Saturday afternoon double header in Jacksonville, FL.

Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (2-6) picked the game one victory in a 18-1 five inning Run Rule victory. Freshman pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (2-2) evened up her record at .500 with the victory in game two of the double header. Once again the Lady Night Hawks Run Ruled EWC in the five inning 16-0 rout. TU wrapped up their six day - ten game florida road trip with a 4-6 record.

The Lady Night Hawks return to action next weekend, when they open up play at the Orange Beach Tournament in Orange Beach, AL. TU will face Saint Gregory's University (3PM) and Auburn University-Montgomery (7PM) in day one action on Friday March 12.

 

NAIA #7 Bethel, Sweeps Lady Night Hawks

March 4, 2010

NAIA #7 Bethel College (10-1-1) swept the Lady Night Hawks (4-16) this afternoon in a neutral side double header at Warner University in Lake Wales, FL.

In game one Bethel defeated TU 11-4. Freshman pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (1-2) took the loss. The Lady Night Hawks hug tough with their nationally ranked opponent in game two but fell 5-4. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (2-7) took the loss.

After an off day tomorrow, TU will finish their Florida spring break trip in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday afternoon when they face Edward Waters College in a double header beginning at 12PM.

 

TU Splits Double Header

March 3, 2010

TU (4-14) split a Tuesday afternoon double header with Warner University (9-4-1) on Wednesday afternoon in Lake Wales, FL.

Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (1-6) picked up her first victory of the year in a 5-3 game one complete game victory, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Senior shortstop Rachel Canganelli (2-3, R, 2RBI, 3B, HR) and senior first baseman Kenna Hickman (2-4, R, 2RBI, 3B, HR) each drove in two runs.

Warner came back from a 2-0 deficit in game two, scoring one run in each of the last three innings to avoid the sweep. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (2-6) allowed three earned runs on six hits, in the loss. Fellow senior, designated hitter, Maggie Allen (2-4, RBI) had two hits and drove in a run.

Thomas continues their spring break road trip tomorrow with a neautral site double header against Bethel College, beginning at 12PM in Lake Wales, FL.

 

Webber Sweeps Thomas

March 2, 2010

Host Webber International University (12-7) swept Thomas (3-13) in a double header this afternoon in Babson Park, FL.

Webber shutout TU 9-0 in a five inning Run Rule victory in game one of the doubleheader. The Lady Night Hawks were run ruled again in game two falling 9-1 to WIU. Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (0-7) took the loss in the early game and senior Courtney Scruggs (2-5) lost game two.

The Florida spring break road trip continues tomorrow for TU, when they travel to Lake Wales, FL to face Warner University in a double header beginning at 2PM.

 

Lady Night Hawks Split, End Losing Streak

March 1, 2010

The Lady Night Hawks (3-11) split an afternoon double header with Northwood University (2-10-1) in lake Wales, FL., ending their losing streak at seven.

TU dropped game one 10-8. Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (0-6) took the loss and remained winless on the season. The Lady Night Hawks snapped their seven game losing streak in game two with a 7-6 victory. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (2-4) picked up her second victory of the year.

Thomas continues a long six day Florida road trip tomorrow when they face Webber International University in Babson Park, FL in a double header beginning at 2PM.

 

TU Loses Two

February 27, 2010

TU (2-10) lost two games in day two of the Shorter Tournament in Rome, GA.

Rheinhardt College improved to 9-1 in a 5-4 defeat of the Lady Night Hawks in the morning game. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (1-4) lost her fourth game of the year. In game two, TU was Run Ruled in the sixth inning, falling 10-3 to Ohio Dominican University (1-3). Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (0-5) picked up the loss and continues to search for her first victory of the season.

The Lady Night Hawks will be looking to end a six game losing streak on Monday March 1, when they travel to Lake Wales, FL to face Northwood University in a neutral site double header beginning at 12PM. This will begin a stretch of 10 road games in six days for TU, who is 1-7 on the road in the early going.

 

Softball Drops Two Games to NAIA #12 & #8

Softball (2-8) dropped two games to NAIA Top 15 opponents on Friday afternoon in day one of the Shorter College Tournament in Rome, GA.

In game one NAIA #8 Martin Methodist College (4-2) downed the Lady Night Hawks 8-2. Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (1-3) took the loss. TU took a 1-0 lead in game two on a fourth inning RBI by senior first baseman Jordan Thomas (0-2, RBI, SF) against the host #12 Shorter College (9-0). The Lady Hawks evened up the game in the bottom of the seventh and would go on to plate the game winner in the bottom of the eighth to remain undefeated in the early going. Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (0-4) took the tough loss after tossing 7.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. With the losses, TU fell to 0-6 season against NAIA Top 25 opponents.

Action continues tomorrow from Rome, GA with TU scheduled to face Reinhardt College (10AM) and Ohio Dominican University (12PM).

 

Lady Night Hawks Swept in day Two of Faulkner Tourney

The Lady Night Hawks (2-6) were swept in day two of the Faulkner University Tournament in Montgomery, AL.

TU was run ruled, 20-2, in the morning by NAIA #6 William Carey University (2-2). Junior pitcher Christina Skulas (0-3) dropped her third game of the young season. In their second game off the day Thomas fell 6-4 to NAIA #16 Lee University (3-1). Freshman pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (1-1) took the loss.

NAIA #8 Martin Methodist College awaits the Lady Night Hawks on Friday February 26 in TU's first game of the Short College Tournament in Rome, GA. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM.

 

TU Splits in Day One of Faulkner Tourney

February 19, 2010

TU (2-4) split day one of the Faulkner University Tournament, losing 5-0 to the Rheinhardt College Eagles (6-0) and defeating the host Faulkner University Eagles (1-3) 3-2 on Friday in Montgomery, AL.

In game one the Lady Night Hawks were shut out by the Eagles. Junior starting pitcher Christina Skulas (0-2) took the loss. The Lady Night Hawks bounced back in the night cap and defeated the host, Faulkner, on a strong winning performance by freshman starting pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (1-0).

Day two of the Faulkner Tourney will pit TU up against NAIA #6 William Carey University at 10AM and #16 Lee University at 2PM.

 

NAIA #18 Mobile Sweeps Lady Night Hawks

February 14, 2010

The visiting NAIA #18 University of Mobile Rams (2-0) swept the Lady Night Hawks (1-3) in a Sunday afternoon double header, 0-10 & 0-2, at Armory Field.

TU will look to snap a three game losing streak on Friday September 19 when they open play at the Faulkner University Tournament. The Lady Night Hawks will face Rheinhardt College at 2PM and then face host Faulkner University at 8PM.

Saturday's Games Cancelled

February 12, 2010

Saturday's games against the University of Mobile and Montreat College have been cancelled due to rain on Friday and expected freezing tempertarues on Saturday. 

Montreat College will not be making the trip down to South Georgia but TU will square off against the University of Mobile on Sunday in a double header beginning at 12PM.

 

Lady Night Hawks Open Season with Split

The Thomas University Lady Night Hawks softball team (1-1) opened their 2010 season with a double header split, 3-2 & 0-1, against the visiting Faulkner University Eagles (1-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Armory Field.
