Social Work Application & Information
The Social Work Program requires that students who wish to work toward their undergraduate social work degree be admitted to the major through a separate admissions process. The social work admissions process is described here, along with all of the materials you will need to submit to the program. Please review all of these materials carefully. It is important for you to note that the social work program is a four-semester program of study that begins in the fall semester. The Division of Social Work offers both day and night time programs to accommodate traditional and non-traditional students’ schedules.
The primary social work admissions period is in the spring semester prior to your junior year. However, admissions applications are accepted on a year-round basis and some social work courses may be taken as electives prior to completion of 60 semester hours.
Please look over all of the program admission materials. Review the social work admissions steps and then return all of the required forms to the social work division; you may also give the forms to any member of the social work faculty. If you have any questions about the program, course prerequisites, or the social work admissions process, please contact us at 229-226-1621.
We will be most happy to schedule an appointment with you at any time. Thank you for your interest in our program, and we look forward to hearing from you.
SOCIAL WORK ADMISSIONS PROCESS
The admissions process for the Thomas University Social Work Program has been designed to help both the faculty and you decide if social work is the right major for you.
To be admitted to the Program, you first must complete an Undergraduate Admissions Packet. This application packet includes:
1. the completed social work admissions application form;
2. your undergraduate social work admissions statement;
3. two letters of professional / academic reference (the forms from the application packet are required);
4. current / past transcripts sent to the Thomas University Registrar (including a current degree audit from the Registrar)
All these materials must be submitted before your social work application can be accepted. Your application will be evaluated by the faculty on five criteria:
1. your overall GPA;
2. your grades while at Thomas University (if applicable);
3. the quality of your social work admissions essay;
4. your professional and/or academic references; and
5. your interview (or other experience with faculty).
To be admitted to the social work undergraduate program, you must have a GPA of 2.5 or above and should be a junior by the start of the fall semester. However, some social work courses may be taken as electives prior to completion of 60 semester hours.
Transfer students who have taken courses from another accredited college or university must consult with the social program faculty and the university registrar about how credit will transfer.
Social work applications are taken year round. However, first semester courses for the major are offered fall semester only. Please give your application packet to the social work faculty.
