What happens after I am accepted to Thomas University?

Once your admissions file is complete, and you have submitted all admission requirements, you will receive a registration packet, along with your acceptance packet that includes information about your TU email account and the registration process. Your file will be turned over to our Registrar's Office who will complete a transfer evaluation based on previous college coursework (if applicable). This evaluation will indicate the transfer GPA on all work attempted and it will also identify courses that are used to fulfill Core Curriculum requirements. This evaluation is crucial to the advisement process. Notice of the need for the placement exam will also been done at this time and a student requiring the exam will need to schedule it before registration. All accepted students will then be contacted by their assigned advisor (*once their official credit evaluation has been completed by our Office of the Registrar) leading up to the start of the semester they are attending. Registration can be done two ways: on-campus or via phone/email. Once you and your advisor have selected your course schedule, it will be turned in to the Registrar’s Office where it will be forwarded to the Financial Aid Office and then on to the Business Office…you are not required to be present to register! You will receive your class schedule and a statement in the mail shortly after you have registered (please note: if you have not yet completed your financial aid by this time, you will need to do so as soon as possible so your financial aid can be applied to your account). Once done, all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy your time until classes begin.

Do I need to take a placement exam, and if so, how do I go about scheduling it?

Thomas University requires the placement exam for first-time students who do not have SAT scores of 500 or above on the Critical Reading portion and 500 or above on the Math portion, or an ACT composite of 21 or higher. Transfer students who do not have a TU registrar-approved transferable college level English and/or Math credit are required to take the placement exam. Thomas University administers the COMPASS placement exam. Please contact the Office of Admissions to set up your appointment today. Placement exams are given on the TU campus or will be scheduled for you at approved testing center at a location near you.

What if I already took the COMPASS exam?

If you have taken the COMPASS in the past five years you do not need to repeat it unless you choose so. Please contact the office of admissions so we can assist you in having your COMPASS scores sent our way.

When do I know what it will cost and how do I pay my tuition?

All students are required to complete the financial aid process. You need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Thomas University’s school code is 001555. Your financial aid cannot be awarded until you have completed your admissions file (i.e.; provided TU with official transcripts from ALL institutions* you have attended). Once this is confirmed, the Office of Financial Aid will review your file for completeness and will process your financial aid. You will receive an award letter so you will know what you are eligible for.

Please note that you must provide the Office of Admissions with the names of ALL institutions you have attended. If not, the information will be identified during your financial aid process and put a hold on your receiving any aid.

After you receive your award letter you will also learn what your tuition balance owed is. You will be sent a statement from Business Office stating the amount you are responsible for. All students are required to pay their tuition by the first day of class. Students can also contact the Business Office to discuss their bill and make arrangements for payment.

When and how do I get my text books?

Once you have met with your advisor and set your class schedule, you will have the course name and number of the courses you are registered for. If you need a copy of your schedule, you can log in to Hawklink to view your current schedule. Your textbooks and course materials are now available online through our new virtual bookstore at the following address: www.thomasu.bkstr.com. This gives you the freedom to purchase your books whenever it is convenient to you – any time of the day, any day of the week!

When and how do I log on to my courses?

Every registered TU student automatically has a Blackboard account to access on-line courses, submit work, receive information and track their classes. You will not be able to log on to Blackboard until you have completed the registration process and the instructor has downloaded the course(s). Please note that although you may be complete and ready to go months before the start of the semester, it could be the week before classes start until you are able to access your courses. Included in your registration packet you will receive more information on Blackboard and a full copy of the instructions.

Do I need to participate in an orientation?

All new students are strongly encouraged to participate in the New Student Orientation. New Student Orientation is available every semester on-line to accommodate our distance learners. View the Online Student Orientation.
