General Policies and Guidelines

Cell Phones

Cell phones are not prohibited but patrons should strive to maintain the quiet volume level of the environment.

Please set your cell phone ringer to silent/vibrate mode when entering the library.  Extended cell phone conversations should be taken outside as a courtesy to others. 



The library allows children to be present in the library under the direct supervision of an adult/guardian (18 years of age or older.)

The library does not allow parents/guardians to leave any child unattended in the library. If an adult/guardian willingly leaves a child in the library unattended they will be asked immediately to regain supervision of the child. Library policy contends that any infractions incurred by the child are due to the negligence of the adult/guardian and the appropriate authorities will be notified. The library will not be held responsible for the negligent acts of the adult/guardian in regards to their child/children.


"It is the policy of Thomas University that no children shall be left unattended in the Library, computer labs, classrooms, and/or Hawks Nest."



Borrower’s information within the circulation system is STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL and under no circumstances are library employees permitted to make this information available to anyone other than the borrower.

Library records are confidential in the State of Georgia pursuant to Georgia Code 24-12-30.

§ 24-12-30.  Confidential nature of certain library records
   (a) Circulation and similar records of a library which identify the user of library materials shall not be public records but shall be confidential and shall not be disclosed except:   (1) To members of the library staff in the ordinary course of business;
   (2) Upon written consent of the user of the library materials or the user's parents or guardian if the user is a minor or ward; or
   (3) Upon appropriate court order or subpoena.
(b) Any disclosure authorized by subsection (a) of this Code section or any unauthorized disclosure of materials made confidential by subsection (a) of this Code section shall not in any way destroy the confidential nature of that material, except for the purpose for which an authorized disclosure is made. A person disclosing material as authorized by subsection (a) of this Code section shall not be liable therefor.

Food, Beverage & Tobacco Guidelines

These guidelines are designed to ensure a clean study and work environment for all users; to aid in the preservation and care of collections, computer equipment and furniture; and to maintain a pest-free facility.

  • Use of any tobacco products is prohibited. Thomas University is a designated smoke and tobacco free campus.
  • Beverages in re-closable covered containers are allowed in the 2 labs and most areas of the library.
  • Food is permitted in the library.
  • Please eat messy and odorous food at the Hawk’s Nest.
  • No Food or Drink in the Birdwood Archives room.



Gift Policy

The Thomas University Library Director reserves the right to accept or refuse gifts/donations offered to the library’s collection.

Gift items are subject to collection development guidelines and space considerations.  Items not selected to be added to the permanent collection may be offered to other appropriate libraries or non-profit organizations, sold at a book sale, offered to the TU community for free, or discarded.  No items or collections will be accepted with any special instructions or terms as to their disposition.

Anyone bringing materials to the library as gifts must fill out a donation card with the donor’s name and contact information.



Patron Conduct Policy

Library users are expected to act responsibly, appropriately and courteously to preserve the library facilities, environment and collections.  Therefore, disruptive or disrespectful behavior is not to be tolerated.

Persons, who violate any library policy or engage in any conduct deemed inappropriate by the Library Director, may lose their privileges to use the Library, be subject to Thomas University imposed discipline, and/or be subject to criminal prosecution or other legal action, as appropriate.
