Pasek and Paul Showcase set for Sept. 8

Arts for the Community at Thomas University (ACTU) will present the “Pasek and Paul Showcase” as part of its Sundays at Four series on Sept. 8 at the Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe Building.

“Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are amazing musicians,” said M. Nicole Davis, director of the showcase. “Their music first came to my attention through the movie ‘The Greatest Showman.’ I decided to dig in and see what else they had to offer. I realized that their music was so diverse that I could showcase a large number of artists in a really exciting way.”

Known together as Pasek and Paul, the songwriting duo has composed for musical theater, film and television. NBC’s “Smash” and the film “Lala Land” featured their works. They received the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song for “City of Stars,” which was featured in “Lala Land.” Their work on the original musical “Dear Evan Hansen” earned them the Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Davis’ idea for a showcase received a positive response with a number of performers auditioning.

“Even in the audition process, I heard songs that I had never heard before,” Davis said. “All of our singers are extremely talented and excited to perform their music for our audience. We have even incorporated some numbers that use the full cast as well.”

Twenty singers from Tallahassee and Thomasville will participate in the showcase.

“Our cast in inter-generational and multi-talented,” Davis said. “They will be performing music from “DogFight,” “A Christmas Story,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Lala Land” and “The Greatest Showman.”

Dr. Jim Amend, a music faculty member at Thomas University and the accompanist for the Thomasville singers, will also participate.

“Dr. Jim Amend is not only our pianist, but a wonderful collaborative artist,” Davis said. “He has been integral in preparing the music for this show and will be performing a selection as well.”

The event starts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.
