TU participates in Tax-Aide program

By Joshua Barrett

Student writer

Thomas University is giving back to the community by providing free tax help to the elderly and for low- and moderate-income households through the Tax-Aide program sponsored by AARP.

Tax-Aide will run two days a week now through April 15. Assistance is available 1-5 p.m. Mondays on the first floor of Smith-Bonvillian Hall in Classrooms A, B and C. Smith-Bonvillian Hall is located on TU’s Forbes Campus, 1501 Millpond Road. Assistance is also available 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays at the Thomas County Public Library, 201 N. Madison St.

Free parking is available in the lot at the Pinetree Boulevard entrance.

Tax-Aide clients must have a yearly income of $50,000 or below to qualify for assistance.

Randy Minton, a TU Business instructor, coordinates TU’s involvement with Al Bryan, Tax-Aide program organizer. This will be the fourth year TU students have joined community volunteers to help clients in Thomasville. Each year they serve more than 300 people. All Tax-Aide volunteers are IRS-certified.

Minton said he believes that this is a great opportunity for TU and the community because it provides a great chance for both to come together.

“It is a great chance for TU to host this event and for our student volunteers to gain valuable experience,” Minton said. “The people we help really appreciate it and come back each year for the same services.”

In addition to the Thomas County Public Library and TU, Tax-Aide is also sponsored by the Thomasville Rotary Club.

Appointments are required for the Tax-Aide program. To schedule an appointment, call the Thomas County Public Library’s Reference Desk at 229-225-5252. For more questions about the Tax-Aide program, email Minton at
