TU Book Club to discuss 'Under the Wide and Starry Sky' at next meeting

Karen Bickley will lead the discussion of Nancy Horan’s “Under the Wide and Starry Sky” at the Thomas University’s Book Club next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the Campus Center Classroom on TU’s Forbes Campus.

Published in 2014, Horan’s book tells the love story of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his American wife, Fanny. After leaving her husband in San Francisco, Fanny and her three children head to Belgium where Fanny plans a new start for her family. There she meets Stevenson, a young lawyer who will eventually become a successful novelist.

Bickley graduated magna cum laude from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in English and earned a master’s degree in English at the University of Pennsylvania. She served as bibliographer and speech writer for the Dean of the College of Education at Florida State University.

Bickley also worked as a grant writer and conference coordinator for FSU’s Department of Religion and the FSU Humanities Institute. Later, as an Assistant Director for FSU’s Center for Academic and Professional Development, Bickley was in charge of budgets for FSU’s online and part-time degree programs. She also wrote grants for and coordinated the FSU Summer Holocaust Institute for 17 years. Bickley won three national curriculum development awards while working for FSU.

The Book Club meeting is part of Arts for the Community at Thomas University (ACTU). For more information, call 229-227-6964 or email actu@thomasu.edu. Visit thomasu.edu/actu to learn about other ACTU events.
