ACTU to present Chamber Music concert Sunday

Arts for the Community at Thomas University (ACTU) will present an afternoon of Chamber Music at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, as part of its Sundays at Four series. The concert will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 325 W. Jackson St. in Thomasville.

Performers will be Rebecca Fadell, soprano; Karl Barton, flute; Joy Tedford, violin; Boyan Bonev, cello; and Mimi Noda, piano.

The program will include the trio sonata BWV1079 by J. S. Bach from “The Musical Offering” for flute, violin, cello and harpsichord. The primary musical theme was said to be written by King Frederick the Great. Bach fashioned a collection of works that centered on “The Royal Theme,” including this sonata.

Also on the program will be two soprano arias from cantatas by J.S. Bach. The first aria will feature soprano Rebecca Fadell singing “I follow you likewise with joyful steps” in German from the first part of the St. John Passion BWV245. The text focuses on the passage from John 18:15 that after his arrest, Jesus was followed by Simon Peter and another disciple, and extolls the act of following from the perspective of the Christian believer.

The second aria is from a secular, cantata BWV209, written in Italian and titled “He knows not what sorrow is,” it’s about a young scholar who is leaving his home town for study. The selected aria titled “Depart then and with sorrow” about those whom the scholar leaves behind, will also feature Fadell with flute, cello and harpsichord.

The program will conclude with Beethoven's Piano Trio in D major, Op.70 No.1 for violin, cello and piano, which is known as the “Ghost” trio because of the eerie sounding slow movement. This is one of Beethoven’s most celebrated trio sonatas, and touches on a typical theme of the Halloween season. It will serve as a fitting conclusion for the program of Chamber Music.
