TU’s Camp STEMtastic kicks off ‘Bottle Caps to Benches’ project

Students in Thomas University’s Camp STEMtastic are now collecting plastic bottle caps in an effort to have them recycled into “buddy benches” to provide a safe place for students in outside areas at local schools.

Each six-foot bench will require 200 pounds of plastic bottle caps in any color and $250 to create. Once the bottle caps and the money are collected, both will be sent to a company in Florida that will recycle the bottle caps into the plastic “boards” and send back a kit ready to be assembled into a bench.

Known as “buddy benches,” students who sit on one of the benches as school are looking for a friend. Other students recognize their need and help that student. Camp STEMtastic organizers would like to have a buddy bench at each local school.

TU’s Camp STEMtastic students and organizers have partnered in the effort with Thomas County Schools, Thomasville City Schools and Keep Thomas County Beautiful, along camp sponsors WILO, First Commerce Credit Union, Thomasville Antiques Show Foundation, Rotary Club of Thomasville and Kiwanis Club of Thomasville.

Drop-off locations for the bottle caps include all Thomasville City Schools, all Thomas County Schools, First Commerce Credit Union and Thomas University’s Forbes and Magnolia campuses.

For more information about the project or to volunteer as a drop-off location, call 229-226-1621 ext. 1115 or email apenton@thomasu.edu.
