TU’s program named to list of top online counseling programs

The website Best Counseling Degrees this week named Thomas University’s Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling to its list of top online counseling degrees in the U.S.

“Being recognized as one of the top online counseling programs is a huge honor for Thomas University,” said Dr. Cristina Jones, Program Director for the M.S. Degree in Clinical Mental Health and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling. “TU actually has one of the few dually accredited CACREP programs in both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling. By offering our program totally online, we can reach students all over the country.”

Best Counseling Degrees compiled its list of 36 top online counseling degrees from the more than 60 programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP). TU obtained CACREP accreditation in the summer 2017. For CACREP accreditation, the faculty in TU’s program and TU administrators completed an in-depth application demonstrating how TU follows CACREP standards and policies. TU is the only program in Georgia and one of only 13 in the country with the dual accreditation. TU’s program was formerly accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE), which merged with CACREP in July 2017.

“Our students are in the unique position to come not only from a recognized ‘Top Online Program’ but a program that has demonstrated its dedication to excellence though achieving dual accreditation from CACREP,” Jones said. “CACREP accreditation is the gold standard for counseling programs, and our students can feel confident in knowing that our faculty continually analyzes the program to make sure that it remains at the forefront of competitive programs. We know that students can choose to go anywhere for their education, and we are honored that they chose TU. We will continue to make sure that our program adequately prepares them for a career in the counseling and rehabilitation field. Consumers will ultimately benefit from having the opportunity to work with highly trained professionals that genuinely feel called to this profession.”

TU originally began a master’s degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2006 and a master’s degree program in Community Counseling in 2008. The two degrees were combined in 2013. With the merged degree and the CACREP accreditation, students can now become a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and/or a Licensed Mental Health Counselor as part of the program.

“Our program goes to great lengths to make sure that what our curriculum offers will prepare students from any state for licensure,” Jones said. “At a time when many adults are looking to follow their passion and opting for a midlife career change, TU's online program sees to it that nontraditional students can accomplish their dreams in a supportive environment and achieve their goal of helping others live their best lives.”
