Works of Chazz Williams to be featured in TU Art Gallery

By Joshua Barrett, Student writer

The Thomas University Art Gallery will host an exhibit by Chazz Williams, an art professor at Albany State University from Jan. 29 through March 29. The TU Art Gallery is located inside the Student Life Center on TU’s Magnolia Campus.

Williams has spent most of his life in Florida and Georgia. His work is heavily influenced by “a lifetime of witnessing migration, development, and redevelopment,” he said. As a child he was drawn to creative endeavors, especially those that involved “figuring out the workings of things.”

Williams received the Associate of Arts degree in General Studies at Hillsborough Community College, the Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing at University of South Florida and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art at Florida State University.

Williams started his career as an adjunct instructor at Tallahassee Community College and then at FSU. Since 2004 Williams has been a faculty member at Albany State University as an Assistant Professor and was named a full Professor in 2015. In September of 2017 Williams was named a Provost Fellow at ASU.

“Teaching keeps the craft and challenges fresh, and the rewards of helping people realize their goals are soul-nourishing,” he said. “Making and teaching are similar in many ways. They are all about finding things, putting them together, and sharing them.”

In addition to his teaching duties, Williams has volunteered with the Albany Area Arts Council since January 2004. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Albany Museum of Art from January 2009 to May 2015.

A closing reception for the exhibit will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 29. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. The gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursdays, and 8 a.m.-noon Fridays.
