Opera star Phyllis Pancella to perform as part of ACTU

Phyllis Pancella is an accomplished vocalist who’s performed throughout the world with a repertoire ranging from the Baroque era to the 21st century. On Friday, Nov. 17, she’ll bring those talents to Thomasville for a performance as part of the Arts for the Community at Thomas University (ACTU) Fridays at Noon series. She will be accompanied by her Florida State University College of Music colleague and pianist Douglas Fisher.

Pancella’s recent season highlights include her return to Houston Grand Opera in the title role of “Carmen,” performances of Rosina in “The Barber of Seville” with Florida Grand Opera, Isabella in “L’italiana in Algeri” with Boston Lyric Opera, Nerone in “L’incoronazione di Poppea” with Central City Opera, Dorabella in “Così fan tutte” with San Diego Opera, and the Secretary in “The Consu” with Arizona Opera.

In the 2016-17 season, Pancella performed as Maddie in Heggie’s “Three Decembers” with Opera Memphis, and Mukhtar’s Mother in Sankaram’s “Thumbprint” with Beth Morrison Projects at REDCAT L.A. She recently sang the role of Mrs. Lovett in Virginia Opera’s production of “Sweeney Todd,” and she returned to Alabama Symphony as Mother/Witch in Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.”

Douglas Fisher is Professor and Director of Opera Activities at the Florida State University College of Music. He has been conductor and coach of the opera program at FSU since 1990.  Also active as a recital accompanist for singers, Fisher has performed with such artists as Kiri Te Kanawa of the Metropolitan Opera House, Marilyn Horne, Frederica von Stade, Judith Blegen, Anna Moffo and others.

The performance will be at 12 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church Chapel, 425 N. Broad St., Thomasville. The concert is free and open to the public.
