Fridays at Noon to feature Avis Berry on Oct. 27

Considered a modern renaissance woman and jewel of Tallahassee, Avis Berry will share her vocal talents with the Thomasville community on Friday, Oct. 27, as part of the Arts in the Community at Thomas University (ACTU) series Fridays at Noon. The performance will be held in Balfour Chapel, on TU’s Forbes Campus.

Born and raised in Clearwater Florida, Berry started singing in church and later joined a community performance group called Kids-A-Poppin. Berry sings in various music venues, churches and fundraisers in the region and is equally accomplished in jazz, gospel and classical music. She often collaborates with jazz musicians, including Scott Carpenter and Leon Anderson.

Berry has recorded with various artists as a background vocalist and as a soloist with the Berlin Radio Choir on the record “True Light: The Berlin Christmas Concert.” She has also performed in Vietnam, China, Germany and England under the direction of Dr. Andre Thomas. Berry has shared the stage with such greats as Dave Brubeck, Robert Shaw, and various FSU ensembles and faculty, including the FSU Jazz Faculty. She also collaborates musically with various local artists throughout the community on a regular basis.

A Florida State University alumna, Berry is also an elementary school teacher at Gilchrist Elementary school in Tallahassee, Florida, and a librarian at FSU’s College of Music Warren D. Allen Music Library. Her training includes a bachelor’s degree in voice performance from FSU and two master’s degrees: one in elementary education and the other in information studies.

For this performance, Berry will perform with BAM, which includes Brian Hall on bass and Mason Margut on piano.

The performance will begin at noon, and the public is welcome. There is no admission charge, and a complimentary luncheon reception will follow the concert. For more information, email actu@thomasu.edu or call 229-227-6964.
