Thomas University receives $1.4 million grant for Educational Talent Search Program

Thomas University recently received a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education Educational Talent Search Program that will benefit middle and high school students who would be first-generation college students.

“This is primarily a program to let kids know what resources are available to help them go to college,” said Melanie Martin, TU Director of Pre-College Programs.

About 580 students in 6th-12th grades from a total of 10 schools in the area will partner with Thomas University for the Educational Talent Search program. Participants will have a professional advisor to help them navigate the courses to prepare for college along with sessions on improving test-taking strategies.

During the summer, high school ETS students will participate in events on the TU campus that will give them a first-hand glimpse into college life through interacting with TU professors and current students.

“We want our kids to know that small universities have something to offer,” Martin said. “We want them to see the classrooms and the campus and interact with current students.”

ETS participants are encouraged to take Advanced Placement classes or participate in the Move on When Ready dual enrollment program. They will also visit other college campuses, compete in an academic bowl and participate in Peace Jam at Florida State University. (Peace Jam is a service learning program in which students learn from Nobel Peace Prize recipients.)

“We’re all about exposing them to college as much as possible,” Martin said. “We want them to know they can go to college and that they have the resources to enter college and be successful. We want to create opportunities for them to see their potential.”
