TU social work students to hold teen parenthood resource fair

On April 16, the graduating class of Thomas University’s Division of Social Work will hold a resource fair and family day for Tallahassee area teenage parents.  The event will be in Tallahassee at Cascades Park in the Discovery play area from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Local agencies supporting teenage pregnancy and parenthood will be available with information and registration for services.

The resource fair will feature free food, door prizes, face painting, children’s hair braiding, and other activities for families.  Transportation will be provided by Discount Transportation at no cost to and from the Walker-Ford, Jack McLean and Lawrence-Gregory community centers.

The future social workers were tasked with organizing a community project in their final semester.  They chose to provide resources and support for the teen parent population after hearing the story of a classmate who experienced teenage pregnancy in this area.  She recalled feeling lost and not knowing where to get help during that difficult time.  Combining their experience, passion, and hard earned social work skills, the Thomas University students are eager to provide this event to their community and raise awareness of a population in need of support.

For more information please contact Kristel Avilus at (850) 528-6467 or check the Facebook event page Teen Parent Resource and Family Day.
