Thomas University to honor veterans with week of events

Thomas University will honor veterans and raise funds for its Veteran Student Services during “Thank you for your service,” a series of events from Monday, March 28, through Thursday, March 31, on TU’s Main Campus.

On Monday, March 28, the newly updated Veterans’ Career and Resource web portal will launch. This portal will feature student veterans’ testimonials as well as resources to assist veterans looking for career resources or considering educational opportunities. The portal can be accessed on March 28 www.thomasu.edu.

At 8 p.m. March 28, a luminary event will be held on TU’s Main Campus to honor veterans. Luminaries may be purchased for $5 each with all proceeds going toward TU Veteran Student Services. The event will also include live music. Luminaries may be purchased at http://www.tuveteranstudentservices.myevent.com.

Tuesday, March 29, will feature two seminars for veterans and those who work with veterans. Dena Green-Corbett of VA Homeless Healthcare will present “Introduction to Veteran Homelessness” at 1:30 p.m. Lena Lewis of Family Endeavors will present “Veteran Housing 101” at 2 p.m. Both presentations will be held in the Flowers Foods Executive Classroom inside Smith-Bonvillian Hall.

At noon on Wednesday, March 30, a tree planting ceremony will be held at the flagpole in front of the Forbes Building to honor TU’s commitment to helping veterans. Seminars will continue with “Speaking with Your Veteran” at 1:30 p.m. by Nicole Gatlin, Rehabilitation Counselor. At 2 p.m. Haley Shank, Resource Director at DogTagss, Inc. will present “Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Treatment of Migraines, Post-Traumatic Stress, Brain Injury, Depression, Addiction and Insomnia.” Both seminars will be held in the Flowers Foods Executive Classroom.

On Thursday, March 31, a Veterans’ Resources and Career Fair will be held at various locations on TU’s Main Campus from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Community partners will be on hand with booths providing information for veterans about employment, support services and other resources. Live entertainment and free food will also be available. In addition, a drawing will be held for one of three gift cards for local merchants. Tickets are available at http://www.tuveteranstudentservices.myevent.com.
