Jones receives first High Achievers Scholarship at TU

This week Christina “Lexi” Jones, 17, graduates from Bishop Hall Charter School. During the school’s awards breakfast held Thursday, Dec. 17, Jones received the first-ever Level I High Achievers Scholarship at Thomas University.

The daughter of Linda and Robert Jones of Thomasville, she began as a dual-enrollment student at Thomas University in fall 2015 as part of the Move on When Ready program. Jones will continue as a student at TU in January with plans to major in psychology.

“I really enjoyed taking classes there and felt like the teachers really cared about me and my grades,” she said. “I felt comfortable there, so I decided to continue going.”

The new High Achievers Scholarship is open to high school students from Brooks, Colquitt, Decatur, Grady, Mitchell and Thomas counties.  

“Thomas University is pleased to offer the High Achievers Scholarship to high school seniors in our region,” said Dr. Jill Dennis, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing. “Recent years of renovations and growth have enhanced our ability to better serve traditional-age students. Our highly interactive, student-centered, dynamic learning environment provides an educational experience that explores and develops each student’s full potential. We want area students to consider Thomas University as an option for their higher education goals. The High Achievers Scholarship will assist students committed to academic excellence in affording the best higher education.”

The Level I High Achievers Scholarship is $6,000 ($6,500 for students who live on campus) per academic year. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and at least 12 hours of dual-enrollment credits from any Move On When Ready participating college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA. Applicants are also required to submit essays on provided topics. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 or better GPA.

The Level II High Achievers Scholarship is $4,000 ($4,500 for students who live on campus) per academic year. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and at least 12 hours of dual-enrollment credits from any Move On When Ready participating college or university with a 2.5 minimum GPA. Applicants are also required to submit essays on provided topics. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 or better GPA.

Competition for 2016-2017 High Achievers Scholarships will open Feb. 1, 2016. Thomas University will award up to five scholarships in each category. For more information about the High Achievers Scholarship, contact the TU Office of Admissions at 229-227-6925 or admissions@thomasu.edu.
