Thomas University opens Kuanyin Lotus Garden, China Pavilion on Main Campus

Photos by Rachel Wiggins

Guests take a tour of the new Kuanyin Lotus Garden on Thomas University’s Main Campus during an opening ceremony held Tuesday, April 28. Funding for the garden and the nearby China Pavilion was provided by the Lotus Educational Foundation in recognition of Thomas University’s successful academic cooperative programs with universities in China. Foundation representatives cite TU’s focus on each student’s strengths, capabilities and will to succeed as values that are consistent with the key ideals of Kuanyin, the goddess of mercy, who emphasizes empathy and the principle of benefitting others first in order to benefit oneself. A statue of Kuanyin is the focal point of the garden.

Guests get a closer look at the statue of Kuanyin, the goddess of mercy, who emphasizes empathy and the principle of benefitting others first in order to benefit oneself. The statue and the marble wall behind it were created in China and shipped to the U.S. to be installed in Thomas University’s new Kuanyin Lotus Garden.

Located near classrooms and the library, guests tour the China Pavilion, which is intended as a place for people to exchange ideas and foster friendship.
