Smith joins TU as Director of International Program Administration

By Rachel Wiggins, Student writer

SandiSmithThomas University officials recently announced the appointment of Dr. Sandi Smith as Director of International Program Administration.

“Higher education is valued around the world, and Thomas University has been a leader in opening doors for students in Asia, in particular, to earn a college degree from an American university,” said Dr. Ann Landis, Executive Vice President and Provost at Thomas University. “With currently more than 900 students in Thomas University’s cooperation programs in China, the Director of International Program Administration has to ensure that day-to-day operations go smoothly and that students earn the rigorous degree they are seeking.  The Director also oversees our recruitment initiatives that bring Asian students to study at our campus in Thomasville.”

A native of California, Smith said her interest in international education began when she worked in Palau for two years teaching kindergarten and first-grade students. It was this life transforming experience that led her to focus her career on internationalizing higher education.

After finishing her doctorate, Smith has been administering student exchange and study abroad programs at various universities, including Florida State University, Emory, Lehigh and University of Virginia. Most recently before joining Thomas University, Dr. Smith worked as the U.S. representative for establishing academic relationships for the University of Nicosia, Cyprus.

“I chose Thomas University because I was looking for a college that demonstrated a commitment to internationalization” Smith said. “The opportunity to work one-on-one with the student, is something I appreciate about the small college environment. The focus on student success and individualized attention to academic goals is important to me. I am excited to be a part of Thomas University and look forward to contributing to distinctive international and intercultural learning opportunities for staff, faculty and students.”

Landis said, “Dr. Smith was the right person for the Director role because she has relevant graduate degrees and extensive professional experience focused on internationalizing higher education. She has been committed to developing opportunities for global education – for international students and for American students to broaden their cultural experience.  We are excited to have her bring her experience and expertise to Thomas University.”

Smith holds a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University and a master’s degree in Higher Education and Adult Education from Appalachian State University.
