ACTU to present spirituals concert on Sunday

Arts for the Community at Thomas University (ACTU) will present “Americana: Spirituals” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, in the Flowers Foods Executive Classroom of Smith-Bonvillian Hall on TU’s Main Campus.

“While born out of slavery, spirituals have become more universal because they speak not only to times of sorrow and sadness, but also to celebration and faith,” said Lisa Mitchell, Assistant Professor and one of the vocalists.

The program will feature great American spirituals and will include vocalists Rebecca Fadell, Lisa Mitchell, Hananel Mavity, Bonnie Woodbery and Karl Barton with pianist Jim Amend.

“Each year we celebrate a section of the American musical quilt, and I am excited to include the tradition of spiritual songs that still resonate in our fast-paced world,” Karl Barton, series coordinator, stated.

The concert is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $5 per person. A reception will follow the performance. For additional information, visit www.thomasu.edu/actu, call (229) 227-6964 or e-mail actu@thomasu.edu.
