Thomas University to hold ‘Defense Support of Civil Authorities’ on Sept. 18

In times of disaster, the Department of Defense is often expected to play a role in responding to the needs of civil support. Brig. Gen. J. Tim Williams of the U.S. Army Reserve will discuss this topic when he presents “Defense Support of Civil Authorities: Disasters Happen!” at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Flowers Foods Executive Classroom inside Smith-Bonvillian Hall on Thomas University’s Main Campus.

Williams will provide an overview of how the Department of Defense meets these demands, how it respects the lead of civil authorities in disease response, and the Army Reserves’ unique and growing role.

Williams’ military career includes assignments in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom. In 2008 he accepted an Active Guard-Reserve tour as the Director, USARC G-7 (Forward). He was confirmed as the General Officer and Deputy Commanding General of the 80th Training Command in June 2009. Williams’ military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and Belgian Parachutist Badge.

Williams currently serves as Superintendent of the Georgia Department of Corrections’ State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth, Ga. Williams’s employment with the Georgia Department of Corrections spans more than 18 years and includes a variety of training, training management and operations management positions.
