TU Social Work Club donates baby items to DFCS

Members of the Thomas University Social Work Club worked with the campus and community to gather items to help infants in foster care as part of the Baskets for Babies program.

On Friday Nov. 15, Social Work Club members donated the items to representatives with the Thomas County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Thomas County DFCS assists at-risk families and links them to beneficial services.

When an infant comes into foster care, DFCS must immediately purchase basic necessities for the child. Through Baskets for Babies, DFCS was able to have supply access to meet the needs of these infants. Dr. Debra Gresham, Assistant Professor of Social Work, and her Social Work Club students were pleased with the number of items collected through Baskets for Babies.

“I am so proud I got to be a part of this great event,” said Samantha Rutherford, TU Social Work student and organizer of the project. “Thanks to everyone that donated or participated. Everyone’s efforts made Baskets for Babies a success.”

Members collected nonperishable items, such as diapers, wipes, baby hygiene products, clothes, bibs, blankets, crib sheets and baby toys.  The items were presented by the Social Work Club to Candis Jones of Thomas County DFCS.

“I felt overwhelmed and thankful knowing first-hand the need of the children,” Jones said. “I thank the Thomas University Social Work Club and the Social Work Department, especially Dr. Gresham and Samantha Rutherford.”
