Thomas University’s Optimal Pedagogy for Learning through Interactive Technology (TOP FLIGHT) is designed to offer required assistance to faculty who teach hybrid or fully online. TOP FLIGHT is based on Quality Matters Standards and National Standards for Quality Online Teaching (NACOL). These standards were used to develop the TOP FLIGHT RUBRIC which outlines technical and pedagogical competencies that must be achieved prior to teaching online or hybrid at Thomas University.
Online and hybrid faculty complete 4 workshops that provide best practices for a well-designed online course involving Blackboard, SoftChalk, and Elluminate. Upon completion of the workshops, each faculty will present a portion of an online course that demonstrates TOP FLIGHT competencies. In addition, each full-time faculty participant will receive a device to assist in course building. New faculty and current faculty who are newly assigned to hybrid or online teaching will also demonstrate competencies by having an evaluator review a course they have prepared at least one month prior to the course start date. Competencies are measured according to the TOP FLIGHT RUBRIC.
Thomas University also offers an Online Teaching Certificate for faculty who choose to complete the certificate requirements. The certificate and a $100 stipend is awarded.
