Flint River Basin Partnership Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) Project

Innovative system of conserving water from center pivot irrigation farms by excluding wetlands and other non-farmable land cover.  Savings are generated by removing non-crop areas from irrigation; coordinating application amounts with variations in soil type and topography; and eliminating double application from pivot overlap.

Variable rate irrigation (VRI) reduces water use by an average 15%-20% by retro-fitting center pivot irrigation systems with variable rate irrigation (VRI) systems with an average water savings of 20% per center pivot would save the Lower Flint River Basin approximately 45 billion gallons of water.
